Tricks and Treats, A Halloween Show - Paul Henri Bourguignon
- Ventana Fine Art 400 Canyon Road Santa Fe, NM, 87501 United States (map)
Bourguignon is well known for exploring modernist movements in his paintings and drawings. As the art critic for the Brussels newspaper Le Phare in the early 20th century, he interviewed artists integral to these European movements. Bourguignon’s landscapes and portraits are well known for reaching deep into his Cubist, Fauvist, and Minimalist roots. Less well known but equally compelling are his paintings with origins born in German and French Expressionism. In these paintings, Bourguignon follows the lead of Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and James Ensor who encouraged distortion of form, dark subjects, exaggerated brushstrokes, and strong colors to convey deep emotion.
The paintings in this exhibition are sometimes ominous and sometimes humorous in true trick or treat fashion. Regardless of what they depict, they are full of mystery and beauty and they demand consideration, appealing to the farthest reaches of our psyche. Float in and join us for scary good art and treats at a reception on Friday, October 26, from 5 to 7.p.m. The show runs through November 12 with representation ongoing.
